It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: On the evening of April 1, 2023, at around 9:00 PM, Officer Chad Schwegel from the Vineland Police Department noticed a 2016 Hyundai running two red lights at different intersections while traveling east on West Landis Avenue. He decided to pull the car over after it turned onto North Delsea Drive heading north. As he walked up to the vehicle, he smelled alcohol and noticed the driver was moving slowly. The driver, 23-year-old Karly Stassi, claimed she had just left her home and insisted she had not been drinking. However, her slurred speech and the strong smell of alcohol prompted Officer Schwegel to call for another officer certified in field sobriety tests to assist with the situation. Officer Aaron Doherty arrived to conduct the field sobriety tests, which Karly agreed to complete. She confessed to him that she had drunk alcohol a few hours earlier at a bar before leaving with a man she had just met, even though she had initially denied it when Officer Schwegel asked her. The first test was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. During this, Officer Doherty noticed that Karly's eyes did not move smoothly. He saw distinct nystagmus at the maximum point of her gaze, and it began before 45 degrees in both eyes. In the second test, the Walk and Turn, Karly struggled to walk a straight line and could not count her steps out loud correctly. For the third test, the One Leg Stand, she failed to keep her foot up properly and dropped it multiple times. The last exercise required Karly to recite the alphabet from B to H, which she did without making any mistakes. Due to her traffic violations, erratic driving, and failure to perform several field sobriety tests, Officer Schwegel arrested Karly for driving under the influence. After the arrest, Officer Schwegel searched her car and discovered an open beer can. Karly was then taken by Officer Jennifer Ramirez to the Vineland Police Headquarters, where she expressed her right to remain silent. Later, Officer Michael Dennis informed her about the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators, and Karly agreed to take breath tests. The results showed her blood alcohol content was 0.19%, over twice the legal limit. After Karly went through the processing, she received several summonses.
