On December 7, 2024, at approximately 11 p.m., Shelby police officers arrived at an Arby's on Mansfield Avenue to serve a warrant issued by the Shelby Municipal Court for Tyler Jacobs, who had failed to appear in court, according to police. Recently released body camera footage captures Sergeant Noah Kocher and Officer Dominic Ewing entering the Arby’s and asking an employee to locate Jacobs. Kocher instructs Ewing to move to the back of the restaurant to prevent Jacobs from escaping through the rear door. The footage then shows Jacobs approaching Kocher. About 20 seconds after initiating contact, Jacobs is seen wielding a knife and stabbing Kocher in the neck. Kocher immediately draws his firearm and fires multiple shots at Jacobs. The video also shows Ewing rushing back into the restaurant to provide aid to both Kocher and Jacobs. Both men were transported to a nearby hospital, where Jacobs succumbed to his injuries, police reported. Kocher is in stable condition.
