On May 11, 2024, police in Nutley, New Jersey, were dispatched to a CVS pharmacy regarding a shoplifting incident. A store supervisor reported that a male suspect stole various Dove bar soap products totaling $160.06 before fleeing the scene. Surveillance footage showed the suspect wearing a denim jacket and blue sweatpants over a layer of pink clothing. Officers canvassing the area located the suspect walking down Franklin Avenue wearing the pink clothing and carrying two backpacks. Upon being stopped for questioning, the suspect appeared nervous and attempted to back away from the officers. As police moved to detain the individual, he actively resisted by tensing his arms and maneuvering his body away. Officers brought the suspect to the ground, at which point one of his backpacks opened, spilling the stolen soap products onto the grass. Once secured in handcuffs, a search incident to arrest revealed a broken glass pipe containing burn residue, an item commonly used to inhale drugs. Other officers conducting a search of the area located the suspect's discarded denim jacket, blue sweatpants, and hat in a garbage can behind a nearby building. The suspect was transported to police headquarters, processed, and charged with shoplifting, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest, and obstruction. All charges were placed on a summons, and officers provided the individual with a courtesy transport to a bus stop. These charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. An arrest is not a finding of guilt: that’s something for a court to decide.
