It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: At about 1:11 in the morning on September 29, 2021, Officer Gregory Barlaug from Tampa Police saw a red 2011 Ford Edge run a traffic signal on E Twiggs Street. He turned around onto N Nebraska Avenue and saw the driver make an illegal right turn on red onto E Kennedy Boulevard. The vehicle was swerving and speeding as it continued down the road. A quick check revealed that the car’s owner had a suspended Florida driver’s license. When the driver turned north onto University Drive, the officer pulled them over. The driver stepped out of the vehicle and was identified as 21-year-old Emily Smith. While talking to Emily, Officer Barlaug noticed signs of impairment. He asked how much she had been drinking. Emily first denied drinking anything but then admitted to having two glasses of Cabernet a few hours earlier. She explained she had been doing homework at American Social and was dropping passengers off at The Patio, a bar in Tampa. Sensing she might be drunk, the officer asked her to do field sobriety tests. After completing the tests, Officer Barlaug concluded Emily was too impaired to drive. Her erratic driving, the scent of alcohol, signs of intoxication, and her poor performance on the tests led him to arrest her for DUI. Before being handcuffed, she was allowed to make a phone call. Another officer arrived to stay with the car until it could be towed. Emily was taken to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office at Orient Road Jail. She agreed to give breath samples, which showed BAC levels of 0.094% and 0.096%. Both results are above the legal limit of 0.08%. She was charged with a DUI under Florida law and later released while waiting for her court date.
