-Los Angeles, CA. -June 19, 2023. Residents in a usually quiet Diamond Bar neighborhood where startled Monday when authorities ended up shooting a suspect wearing body armor. According to officials with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, the incident happened in the area near Diamond Bar Boulevard between Willow Heights and Crooked Creek Drives. According to LASD, the man was involved in a confrontation with his mother in their home, a woman in her 60s. He then stabbed his mother once in the back with a sharp object. It was not clear if the object was a knife. Deputies responded to the location near the 2900 block of Crooked Creek Drive at about 11:30 a.m. in the community east of Los Angeles after a report of a man wearing body armor and firing rounds with a rifle. The man walked down Crooked Creek Drive, towards Diamond Bar Boulevard holding an AR-15 style rifle, shooting rounds into the air, LASD said. LASD officials said the suspect shot a round with an assault rifle. Shortly after deputies arrived at the scene, a deputy-involved shooting occurred. The coroner confirmed the 30-year-old suspect died. His identity was not released. All deputies were accounted for, authorities said. "We are all in shock, we're like ‘what’s going on?' At first we thought maybe fireworks? People celebrating early? But no," one neighbor said. SkyFOX video from the scene shows a weapon on the ground at the first scene. A Tesla was located at a second scene a couple blocks away, where residents told investigators "they shot at an individual near the white Tesla." "I guess he was gunning for someone with a knife, or something like that," the witness said. With little information, residents say they can only wonder. "They say they found an individual with a rifle and a flap jacket on… I am a combat veteran… when you're wearing a vest and carrying a rifle on you you are gunning to get into a firefight with law enforcement or you are getting ready to do something really bad," one resident said. A neighbor told media on the scene that the suspect lives with his mother in the area, and the two were involved in a dispute Monday morning, ending with the suspect stabbing the woman. The woman was taken to a hospital and her condition is unknown.
