Killer Grandma Throws 2-Year-Old From Mall Walkway—Then Says She Wanted Her Gone On November 29, 2010, what began as a family trip to Tysons Corner Center in Fairfax County, Virginia, ended in an unimaginable tragedy involving 2½-year-old Angelyn Ogdoc and her grandmother, Carmela dela Rosa. After leaving the mall's food court with her family, Carmela picked up her young granddaughter on an elevated walkway and threw her over the railing. Angelyn was rushed to Inova Fairfax Hospital alive. Despite efforts to save her, she died from her injuries approximately nine hours later. Within hours of the incident, Fairfax County detectives brought Carmela in for questioning. What followed was a disturbing interrogation in which detectives carefully worked through her account of what happened, her relationship with her family, her medication and mental-health history, and her feelings toward Angelyn's father. As the interrogation progresses, Carmela's descriptions become increasingly significant. Detectives challenge her wording, question her intentions, and repeatedly return to one fundamental issue: what did she actually want to happen when she threw Angelyn over the railing? Eventually, the questioning reaches one of the most chilling moments of the interview. When a detective asks whether she wanted Angelyn to be "gone permanently," Carmela answers: "Yes." This episode of Stay Alert Interrogation examines the police interview, the detectives' questioning strategy, Carmela's own statements, and the circumstances surrounding the death of Angelyn Ogdoc. Carmela dela Rosa was subsequently prosecuted in Fairfax County Circuit Court. During her trial, her defense argued that she was legally insane at the time of the crime. The jury rejected the insanity defense and convicted her of first-degree murder on October 6, 2011. On January 6, 2012, Carmela dela Rosa was sentenced to 35 years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Stay Alert Interrogation presents police interviews and criminal cases with original narration, contextual commentary, and documentary analysis.
