According to dispatch information, a transient male had entered a restricted employee service area and refused repeated requests to leave the property. The individual was later identified as 34-year-old Albert Cota. When deputies arrived, they observed Cota standing near the south customer entrance of the business. As deputies made contact and approached him, Cota moved deeper into the establishment toward the service counter area. Deputies ordered Cota to stop and show his hands, but he allegedly refused to comply. Investigators say Cota then removed a handgun from his jacket pocket and pointed it at deputies, prompting a deputy-involved shooting. Cota was struck by gunfire and collapsed inside the business. Deputies immediately began rendering medical aid until personnel from the Los Angeles County Fire Department arrived on scene. Cota was transported to a local hospital, where he received medical treatment. No deputies, employees, or customers were injured during the incident. Authorities later recovered an air gun pistol marked “Glock 17” at the scene. The replica firearm contained a loaded magazine with unfired 9mm-style cartridges.
