On January 26, 2022, Alexis Gabe, 24, of Oakley, California, went to see her ex-boyfriend, Marshall Jones, at his home in Antioch. She never came home. Her family reported her missing the next day. That evening, Oakley police officers went to his door. WHAT HE TOLD THEM He said she arrived around 6:30, that they hugged, that she watched him play a video game, that they had sex and watched Family Guy, that she was fine, and that she left through the garage around nine. He showed officers his text messages and said he had been texting her mother to find her. Five days later a search warrant was served at the house. WHAT HIS SISTER TOLD THEM On February 23, 2022, detectives interviewed his older sister at her home. Her face is blurred in this video and she is not named. She told them her brother had called and asked where to buy a black light, that she ordered one to her house, that he had brought a gun into her home in his backpack, that she later found it under her pillows, and that he had written a set of very precise directions while at her house. She said he told her he would not turn himself in. She said she had found a spiral notebook and was trying to reach her attorney to hand it over. WHAT HIS MOTHER TOLD THEM On May 4, 2022, detectives interviewed his mother. Asked whether she was distancing herself from her son, she said no. WHAT HAPPENED NEXT Marshall Jones was charged with murder on May 26, 2022. On June 1, a U.S. Marshals task force found him at an apartment in Kent, Washington. Police said he charged at officers with a knife. A Seattle police detective, a Snohomish County sheriff's detective and a deputy U.S. Marshal opened fire. He died at the scene. He was never tried, and the charge against him was never tested in court. In July 2022, police gave Alexis's family handwritten directions, found at his sister's house, that pointed to a rural area of Amador County. On November 3, 2022, a resident found partial human remains off Jackson Road near Plymouth. They were identified as Alexis the next day. Her earrings were with them. In January 2025 the Contra Costa County District Attorney announced that Marshall's mother would not be charged as an accessory after the fact. The DA said some evidence "raised suspicions" but that there was not enough to prove a charge beyond a reasonable doubt, and that there were plausible alternative explanations. Alexis's family publicly disagreed with that decision. Nobody other than Marshall Jones has ever been charged in connection with her death. Alexis's father, Gwyn Gabe, told CBS in June 2022: "We didn't want him dead, we wanted him arrested to pay for his sins."
