Cudini emerged from the vehicle holding a woman hostage, pressing a gun against her head while demanding that deputies back away. When the suspect opened fire on police, one deputy found a narrow window to take a critical shot. Within seconds, the entire situation changed. Six deputies ultimately opened fire. Dante Cudini was fatally shot, while the female hostage was rescued alive. But the second case in Peoria, Illinois ended far more tragically. Ashley Stenson had returned to Peoria for a wedding when her ex-boyfriend, Cortez White, unexpectedly appeared and took her against her will. Ashley secretly texted her family, warning them that White was losing control and that she feared he intended to kill her. When a police officer located the two outside a downtown hotel, everything happened almost instantly. White pulled a handgun and shot Ashley before turning the weapon on the responding officer. Now alone in a deadly gunfight, the officer had to find cover, reload, pursue the suspect and return fire to stop the threat.
