Callers reported that the suspect, later identified as 46-year-old Brian Steele, had crashed his vehicle into the building, shattering the facade, before terrorizing customers and employees with knives and threats to kill. Fearing for their safety, employees locked themselves in a back room until officers arrived. Upon arrival, officers observed Steele outside the store armed with two knives. Despite multiple commands to drop the weapons, he refused and confronted the officers. Steele, covered in blood from self-inflicted wounds, was briefly accompanied by his girlfriend during the tense standoff. Officers, with weapons drawn, worked to de-escalate the situation verbally, assuring Steele they did not want to harm him as he repeatedly shouted, "Kill me, kill me." His girlfriend eventually moved to safety. Additional officers arrived and successfully deployed a Taser, causing Steele to drop the knives. He was immediately secured by officers, who also ensured no one inside the store was harmed. Two serrated kitchen knives were recovered, and Steele was transported to the Warren Jail after receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital. Charges Filed On December 30, 2024, the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office charged Steele with the following: One count of assault with intent to rob while armed (life felony) Two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon (4-year felony each) One count of malicious destruction of a building valued at $1,000 or more (5-year felony) Steele, a habitual fourth offender due to prior convictions, was arraigned in the 37th District Court in Warren by visiting Judge Metry. A not guilty plea was entered, and bond was set at $250,000 cash/surety with a GPS tether required if posted. Steele, who was on parole at the time, has a history of felony convictions including breaking and entering, home invasion, retail fraud, and larceny.
