Overnight, deputies responded to Patron Avenue in Deltona for a report of a person with a gun setting a fire in the street. On arrival, deputies found the subject of the call standing in the road setting items on fire. He was carrying a rifle and wearing an armored vest. Deputies established a perimeter and began speaking with him. During the conversation, he made several statements about his frustrations and indicated he might provoke a deputy-involved shooting. Extra resources were deployed, including a helicopter, drone, and additional deputies from the surrounding area. After about an hour of negotiations, the subject appeared ready to surrender. He was seen laying down his rifle and removing his vest. However, as he began moving toward the receiving team, he became agitated and started walking back toward his firearms. At that moment, a deputy successfully deployed two 40mm less-lethal rounds, which subdued him and enabled deputies to move in and take him into custody safely. Deputies took custody of the rifle, a shotgun and a Taser the subject threw into the road, as well as 2 handguns from the open trunk of his vehicle. A Risk Protection Order was completed regarding the weapons and ammunition. The subject was taken into protective custody under the Baker Act and transported to an area hospital for evaluation and treatment. Thanks to the de-escalation training, less-lethal equipment and the efforts of all units who responded to this call, it was resolved without serious injury or worse.
