A routine disabled vehicle check quickly escalates when an officer suspects impairment, leading to a tense roadside sobriety assessment. Sergeant Matthew Gajewski encountered a disabled 2020 Toyota SUV with a flat tire on Shore Road. Upon contact with the 45-year-old driver, the officer noted her slurred speech and a distinct odor of alcohol, prompting a DUI investigation. The driver denied consuming alcohol and refused to provide her license or participate in field sobriety exercises as instructed, specifically failing to comply with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test by not following instructions. She also struggled significantly with the Walk and Turn and One Leg Stand assessments, stumbling and leaning on her vehicle for support. Based on the visible impairment and test failures, she was placed under arrest for operating under the influence. Later, at police headquarters, her Alcotest results revealed a staggering blood alcohol content of 0.332%, significantly exceeding the legal limit.
