A routine traffic stop on June 15, 2023, escalated into a major felony arrest when Elgin police pulled over 34-year-old Jerome E. Ames for suspected drug activity and traffic violations. Tensions flared after Ames refused to cooperate and a police K-9 unit alerted to his vehicle, prompting a physical struggle that left an officer injured as Ames actively resisted a search. Police ultimately discovered individually wrapped cocaine in Ames's pocket and a loaded 9mm handgun hidden in the trunk of the car. Ames, a convicted felon with a prior attempted murder record, was charged with multiple felonies including possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, and was later denied pretrial release by an Illinois Appellate Court due to the significant risk he poses to the community.
