On June 16, 2026, a Florida Highway Patrol trooper pursued a driver who was clocked at 112 mph on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. The pursuit started in Tampa in Hillsborough County and continued across the Sunshine Skyway into Manatee County. The driver continued south on I-275 before exiting into Palmetto. Near U.S. 41 and 21st Street East, the trooper performed a PIT maneuver, causing the SUV to spin out and stop. The driver then abandoned the vehicle and ran into a wooded area. The pursuit ended in Palmetto, but the driver managed to escape on foot and was not immediately located.
