[Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only] Toronto, Ontario, Canada — On April 20, 2025, at approximately 11:00 p.m., Toronto Police Service officers were involved in an incident in the area of Sheppard Avenue West and Bathurst Street that resulted in the shooting death of a 16-year-old male during an exchange of gunfire. The incident began when a Toronto Police Service officer conducted a traffic stop of an Infiniti vehicle. The stop was initiated due to a Highway Traffic Act infraction, specifically a missing front license plate. During the course of this traffic stop, an exchange of gunfire occurred. Two police officers discharged their firearms, and the 16-year-old male was struck by the gunfire. He was subsequently transported to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on April 22, 2025. A firearm was recovered at the scene. Preliminary review of body-worn camera footage suggests the youth fired at officers first, and surveillance video also captured the moment gunfire erupted. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Ontario's independent civilian oversight agency, has invoked its mandate and is investigating the circumstances of the incident. Two Toronto Police Service officers have been designated as subject officials in the SIU's investigation, along with two witness officials. A post-mortem examination has been scheduled as part of the ongoing inquiry. Five other occupants of the vehicle, ranging in age from 16 to 20, were arrested at the scene and are facing charges related to firearms. The SIU is appealing to any members of the public with information, including videos or photos, to come forward and assist with the investigation.
