Upon arrival, Officer Hyvarinen contacted the individual involved, identified as 40-year-old Daniel Morris. At first, Morris appeared to comply, raising his hands as if surrendering. Suddenly, without provocation, he punched Officer Hyvarinen in the face. Because he was the only officer on scene, Officer Hyvarinen attempted to gain control of Morris on his own. During the struggle, Morris wrapped his arm around the officer’s neck, placing him in a chokehold. Officer Hyvarinen managed to break free by lifting the 220-pound suspect off the ground and forcing an escape from the hold. The fight continued on the ground, where Morris struck the officer in the face a second time. Officer Hyvarinen ultimately gained control and subdued Morris using force appropriate to the level of resistance. Both men received minor facial injuries. Morris was evaluated by EMS and transported to Danbury Hospital, where he was medically cleared for custody. Daniel Morris was later charged with Assault on Public Safety Personnel, Interfering with an Officer/Resisting Arrest, and Disorderly Conduct.
