On November 27, 2024, Deputies from the Whitman County Sheriff's Office received multiple calls about a reckless driver. Sgt. Jordan located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. The 50-year-old woman explained that she had been driving for 7 hours from Beaverton, Oregon. She denied consuming any alcohol while driving, but Sgt. Jordan advised Deputy Pilloud that he could smell alcohol coming from the woman. The woman was initially asked to blow into a portable breath testing (PBT) device, but she refused. She was then transported to a parking lot, where she attempted field sobriety tests (FSTs). At the conclusion of the FSTs, she decided to complete the PBT, and the result was 0.22% BAC. She was placed under arrest and was transported to the Whitman County Jail. She submitted to an evidential breath test, which also resulted in a reading of 0.22% BAC. It was then revealed to her that she would not be able to bail out of jail without seeing a judge. She was arrested on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, so she would have to spend 72 hours in jail before seeing a judge on Saturday. She was charged with Driving Under the Influence and her case is still open. All suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
