-Phoenix, AZ. -June 28, 2023. This incident occurred in the neighborhood of 19th Avenue and Buckeye Road when Phoenix Police received several emergency calls of a domestic violence situation. The callers indicated a man was assaulting a woman in the area. One of the callers said she saw the man punching the victim then grab a hold of the victim by the neck forcing her back into an apartment. Two officers arrived at the complex and one officer spoke with the man while the other officer spoke with the woman and a witness. Officers learned the man assaulted the victim and attempted to handcuff the man. However, he resisted and took off running. After a short foot pursuit, one officer saw the man pick up a gun from the ground and ordered him to put it down. The man did not comply. It was at this time both officers fired their duty guns at the man. Following the shooting, officers carried the man to Phoenix Fire personnel who then took him to the hospital where he did not survive his injuries. The gun displayed by the man was found on the ground next to him. It turned out to be a pellet gun resembling a semi-automatic handgun. The officers involved in this incident are assigned to the Central City Precinct and have six years and seven years of service with the department respectively. Conclusions about whether the actions of the officers are consistent with department policy and the law will not be made until all facts are known and the investigation is complete. An internal investigation by the Professional Standard Bureau is currently underway, in addition to a criminal investigation. Once the criminal investigation is complete it will then be reviewed by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
