A Detroit police officer was killed in a shootout with colleagues after a distressing series of events. The 45-year-old officer, an off-duty member of the Special Response Team, called 911 from an abandoned building on October 13, threatening suicide and demanding the presence of SRT and a negotiator. Dispatch audio revealed the officer warned he would shoot if anyone else approached. Officers arriving at the scene reported the officer firing shots into the air. As they took cover, he opened fire, injuring two officers in the legs. An officer returned fire, fatally wounding him. Police confirmed the man was wearing his uniform and carrying a high-powered rifle during the incident. He had recently resumed duty after medical leave for back pain.
