On May 31, 2025, at approximately 7:15 p.m., Darius Wong, 43, a father of two young daughters, had just parked his car and was walking to a family party on Filhurst Avenue in Baldwin Park, California, when he was shot and killed. Officers were dispatched after a 911 call. The gunman opened fire the moment the first officer arrived. Footage shows that officer returning fire and then racing to help a second arriving officer injured by glass after a patrol car was shot. Officer Samuel Riveros, 35, a nine-year veteran of the Baldwin Park Police Department, arrived at the scene and warned residents to get out of harm's way. He was shot by the suspect as he moved along the sidewalk. A team of officers rushed to his aid and dragged him out of the line of fire. He was airlifted to USC Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries. A law enforcement helicopter helped ground units find the suspect, Eduardo Roberto Medina-Berumen, 22, lying in the front yard of a nearby home. He was taken into custody after allegedly reaching for his rifle again. Investigators estimated there were 40 to 60 shell casings at the scene. Medina-Berumen is charged with two counts of murder with special-circumstance allegations of multiple murders and the murder of an officer, two counts of attempted murder of an officer, and one count of possession of an assault weapon. If convicted as charged, he could face life in prison or the death penalty. A judge ruled there is enough evidence for the case to proceed to trial. His next court appearance is April 30, 2026. The Baldwin Park Police Department released the 15-minute bodycam video on April 27, 2026, nearly a year after the incident. All individuals are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. #officerdown #bodycam
