It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: On the morning of November 18, 2022, deputies from Indian River County received a call about a woman who seemed drunk at Sebastian River High School. She was seen dropping off a child on school grounds. Corporal Macias was the first to arrive and spoke to a school official who pointed out the woman sitting in her car. When asked to roll down her windows, the woman, later identified as 37-year-old Tonya Mitchell, complied. Immediately, Corporal Macias noticed the strong smell of alcohol coming from the vehicle. When he questioned her about drinking, she confessed that she had been drinking the night before. She explained that she was on school property to drop off her niece. Corporal Macias performed the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test on the suspect. She noticed that he had trouble smoothly moving his eyes and exhibited clear nystagmus in both eyes when they were fully turned to the sides. Additionally, the nystagmus started before the eyes reached a 45-degree angle. After this, he requested a Deputy to take over the investigation. Deputy Rispoli arrived and conducted more field sobriety tests on Mitchell. When Deputy Rispoli arrived, she noticed that Mitchell was having trouble standing upright. Her eyes looked watery and unfocused. At first, Mitchell agreed to take more field sobriety tests. However, as Deputy Rispoli started explaining the Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, Mitchell began to sway. In the end, she could not finish the Walk and Turn or One Leg Stand tests. Mitchell failed the field sobriety tests, leading to her arrest for driving under the influence. Deputy Rispoli then asked her how much she had been drinking that night. Mitchell confessed that she had about 8 ounces of wine and then drank 3 to 4 bottles of beer, each 12 ounces, at Earl's biker bar. Mitchell was taken to the IRC Jail, where she had the chance to take a breathalyzer test. The results showed her blood alcohol concentration was 0.248%, which is more than three times the legal limit.
