Los Angeles, California — A freeway pursuit involving a felony suspect ended in a fatal officer-involved shooting and multiple injured officers on the morning of April 8, 2026. According to investigators, Los Angeles Police Department officers were conducting patrol operations near Central Avenue and Towne Avenue when they located a BMW that had been linked to a felony investigation. Officers began following the vehicle while coordinating additional resources to assist with a potential stop. Authorities say the driver soon accelerated and attempted to flee, prompting officers to initiate a pursuit. The chase continued onto the southbound Interstate 5 Freeway before exiting at Olympic Boulevard. While traveling on the off-ramp, investigators allege the driver suddenly made a U-turn and drove directly into opposing traffic lanes. Moments later, the BMW collided head-on with approaching police vehicles, bringing the pursuit to an abrupt end. Following the crash, the driver, identified by authorities as 30-year-old Jesus Ernesto Jaime, exited the vehicle and moved behind the wrecked BMW. Officers repeatedly ordered him to surrender, but investigators say he failed to comply. According to police, Jaime then produced a handgun and pointed it toward an officer. An officer-involved shooting followed, and Jaime was struck by gunfire. After the scene was secured, officers took Jaime into custody and transferred him to awaiting Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger who remained inside the BMW complied with commands and was taken into custody without further incident. Two officers involved in the pursuit were transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the collision. Both were later released. Investigators recovered a loaded 9mm Glock pistol near Jaime, along with a loaded .357 Magnum revolver found inside the BMW. Authorities reported that no bystanders or other community members were injured during the incident. The shooting remains under investigation.
