When he arrived, Officer Perkins saw a woman outside the school who showed signs of impairment. He went inside to talk with the principal about the situation. Afterward, when he spoke with the woman, he noticed she had a strong smell of alcohol, and her speech was slow and slurred. Officer Perkins read her Miranda rights and began to ask her questions. The woman told him that she had driven to the school by herself and that her other child was not in the car while she was there to pick up her child at Lincoln School. Officer Marlow arrived to help Officer Perkins and started planning for the child's safe release to a responsible adult. The child's father was contacted but was at work. He requested that the Westfield Police allow his daughter to go with their nanny. The nanny, who also lived in Westfield, arrived shortly after and took custody of the child. She filled out the required Westfield Police Juvenile Short Term Custody forms, allowing the child to leave with her. After the child left school with the nanny, Sergeant Ostrander arrived to help, and the woman was led to the parking lot on the north side of the school. Officer Perkins then informed the woman that he would conduct field sobriety tests. He began with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test and noted several signs, including the woman's inability to follow smoothly, distinct shaking at maximum angle, and shaking starting before 45 degrees. Next, the woman attempted the One Leg Stand test and followed the instructions correctly. For the final test, the Walk and Turn, Officer Perkins observed that she did not place her heel to toe with each step, turned incorrectly, did not count her steps out loud, and walked backwards when returning to the starting point. According to the principal's description of the situation, the strong smell of alcohol on the woman and her failure to pass the field sobriety tests led Officer Perkins to arrest her for driving under the influence. Her car was taken by CES Towing and will be held for 12 hours as required by John's Law. Officer Perkins took the woman to the Westfield Police Headquarters. At the station, she received her Miranda warnings, and the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators was read to her. She consented to give breath samples, and Officer Gill used the Alcotest machine to conduct the test. The results showed her blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was 0.17%, which is more than double the legal limit of 0.08%. After completing the processing, she was released to her husband, who signed the Potential Liability Warning form for her. Officer Perkins then issued her one summons for operating under the influence (39:4-50). At approximately 7:05 PM, Sergeant Gregory Penn reported to DCP&P that a woman was trying to collect her child from school while under the influence of alcohol. If she had succeeded, the child would have been in a car with someone who was impaired. DCP&P assured Sergeant Penn that they would look into the situation within 24 hours. 3:45 so she has a husband and there was no friskiness 8:32 Lmao the deep breaths 8:57 How above-board can this woman really be 28:16 is when they head over to her car to begin field sobriety. 40:38 This is definitely not a laughing matter.
