A routine traffic stop for erratic driving quickly unravels a complex web of infractions, revealing a driver's struggle with sobriety and vehicle compliance. On April 23, 2022, a patrolman observed a dark blue 2013 BMW driving erratically on Route 36, initiating a traffic stop on Hillside Avenue. The driver, a 37-year-old woman, immediately exhibited signs of impairment, including slurred speech and confusion about why she was pulled over. She informed the officer the car belonged to her ex and that she lacked current registration, an issue for which she claimed to have been stopped multiple times previously. During the interaction, officers also noted damage to the passenger side of the vehicle's front bumper. Due to her apparent intoxication and observed driving patterns, additional officers arrived to assist with field sobriety tests. The driver struggled significantly with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, Walk and Turn, and One Leg Stand exercises, demonstrating poor balance and inability to follow instructions, though she did complete an alphabet recitation without error. Based on these observations and traffic infractions, she was placed under arrest for driving under the influence.
