It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: At about 4:25 AM on March 16, 2023, officers from the Neptune Township Police Department received a call about a 2011 Ford Fusion that had broken down on the train tracks near the intersection of Route 33 and Memorial Drive. The car was damaged, and the driver got out as the officers arrived. They approached and spoke with her, learning that her name was Veronica. An officer approached Veronica to ask where she was coming from. She explained that she was on her way home from Georgie’s Bar in Asbury Park. Moments later, Officer Brian Bucossi arrived to help out. Officer Bucossi inquired if Veronica had been drinking, and she acknowledged that she had. Due to his concerns about her being impaired, he offered her a chance to take some field sobriety tests. Officer Bucossi began the sobriety evaluation with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. During this test, he noticed that Veronica’s eyes did not follow smoothly. He observed that her eyes showed distinct and lasting twitching when looking to the side and began twitching before reaching a 45-degree angle. However, he did not see any twitching when looking up and down. Next, they moved on to the Walk and Turn test. Veronica struggled to walk in a straight line, failing to touch her heel to her toe with each step and miscounting the number of steps she took. Finally, they performed the One Leg Stand test. Veronica could not complete this task either; she had trouble keeping her hands by her sides and repeatedly put her foot down. After the car accident, Officer Bucossi found out that Veronica had been drinking. She struggled to perform the field sobriety tests, which led to her arrest for driving under the influence. Her car was taken and held for 12 hours because of John’s Law. Veronica was then taken to the Neptune Township Police Department for more processing. At police headquarters, Officer Bucossi explained the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators to Veronica. She agreed to take a breath test. The results showed her blood alcohol concentration at 0.22%, which is almost three times the legal limit of 0.08%.
