Bentonville, Arkansas Bentonville PD (Great job Officers) ***In the first clip, which was filmed by a Citizen, we see how quickly this escalated. The second clip is of one of the involved Officers explaining what transpired to a coworker. There is no BWC footage due to the Agency not having them at the time of this incident.*** I approached the vehicle and made voluntary contact. As I approached, I observed the occupants starting to move around quickly in the vehicle, frantically looking around and ducking. I knocked on the driver’s side back sliding door window, and the male, later identified as Tony Harris, opened the door. As he opened the door with his left hand, I observed a plastic Ziploc bag with a green seal crumpled in his right hand. He quickly threw his right hand underneath the side of his seat to conceal what was in his hands. Both Tony and the other occupant of the vehicle, later identified as Melody George, were visibly nervous. As I introduced myself to them, I could see Tony’s carotid artery pulsing in the side of his neck. They were both sweating and stammered as they spoke. I explained to them why I was talking to them, and I asked for consent to search the vehicle. They declined the search of the vehicle. Given the reasonable suspicion I had already observed of possible criminal activity relating to narcotics, I informed Corporal Michael Alexander #945 to continue to respond to my location, as I would need the assistance of his K9 partner, K9 Bico. Melody told Tony to close the door, and I told them the door would stay open, as they were not free to leave. Melody then jumped into the driver’s seat and said, “We’re leaving.” I, in turn, told Melody they were not leaving and opened the driver’s door. Melody then put the keys in the ignition, started the vehicle and attempted to shift the vehicle in drive. I grabbed the gear shift and shifted it back into park, all while giving Melody orders to stop. Tony then started to try to intervene, and I instructed him to stay in the vehicle. Melody and I continued to fight over the keys and the gear shift. I gave Melody multiple orders to stop, and she continued to scream obscenities. Tony then exited the vehicle and ran up next to me. In an attempt to control the situation as best I could, using an open hand, I pushed Tony back into the back seat of the van. Cpl. Alexander arrived moments later and saw I needed assistance, to which he radioed with dispatch I was fighting the subjects. Cpl. Alexander said he was going to release his partner, K9 Bico, and started to grab him out of his kennel. Cpl. Alexander then grabbed Tony out of the backseat of the van and ordered him to the ground. Cpl. Alexander and I gave multiple commands to Melody, telling her she was going to be bit by K9 Bico if she didn’t stop. Melody continued to scream and not comply with orders. Cpl. Alexander released K9 Bico into the vehicle through the back-driver’s door of the Montana. When K9 Bico entered the van, I stepped back as to not get bitten. Melody used this small window of opportunity to start the vehicle and shift it into drive. She drove forward and struck a light pole in the parking lot. In doing so, I was in the driver’s doorway, and the collision knocked me to the ground. As I was knocked to the ground, I felt a pop in my right ankle. I then got back up and went back to the driver’s door to stop Melody from leaving. K9 Bico was attempting to engage her, so I moved out of Cpl. Alexander’s way in the doorway of the driver’s door to make room for him. Melody then shifted the vehicle in reverse and quickly accelerated into the front bumper of Cpl. Alexander’s patrol vehicle, carrying Cpl. Alexander in the doorway of the driver’s door for the entirety. With Melody having clearly already shown a wanton disregard for human life, I reproached the vehicle and drew my firearm. Cpl. Alexander was standing over Melody and I did not have a clear line of sight. As Cpl. Alexander administered an elbow strike to Melody’s left temple, I observed Tony attempting to leave the scene. I ordered him to stop get on the ground. I holstered my firearm and approached Tony, who was starting to run away from me. I gave short chase and grabbed Tony’s right arm. Tony struggled with me after multiple commands to stop and get on the ground. While I was struggling with Tony, Melody then put the Montana in drive and accelerated quickly, subsequently striking the front bumper of a white Ford F250 belonging to Nathan Tubbs. Tony continued to pull away from me, and I finally pinned him against the hood of an SUV my patrol vehicle was parked next to. Using a modified leg sweep takedown, I took Tony to the ground, rolled him on his stomach, and handcuffed him. After handcuffing Tony, I looked up and saw Cpl. Alexander had Melody on the ground in handcuffs as well.
