After extending once, he stopped all communication and payments. Enterprise sent certified demand letters warning that failure to return the vehicle by January 17th would result in law enforcement notification. Two months later, deputies located the suspect still in possession of the rental vehicle, valued at $21,700. During the arrest, the suspect insisted the matter was civil, not criminal. He refused to exit the vehicle and physically resisted officers, resulting in taser deployment. He was subsequently charged with felony grand theft of a motor vehicle and misdemeanor resisting an officer without violence. The suspect later pleaded no contest, was found guilty, and received a withheld sentence with two years probation. He violated probation within one week, leading to additional legal consequences.
