On January 27, 2025, officers with the St. Charles Police Department responded to a report of a retail theft at a local restaurant in St. Charles, Illinois, after staff reported that a woman had left without paying for her breakfast. Officers later located the woman at the courthouse, where she explained that her husband had driven away with the only credit card and insisted she intended to return and pay the bill. Officers accompanied the woman back to the restaurant, where she apologized to staff and attempted to resolve the unpaid bill. After several unsuccessful attempts to contact friends and acquaintances who might help cover the payment, officers reviewed her criminal history and determined that the case could not be handled as a local ordinance violation due to her prior theft convictions. She was transported to the police station for booking and processing, issued a Notice to Appear (NTA), and trespassed from the restaurant.
