On Friday, January 26, 2024, while traveling east on Interstate 20 near mile marker 84, I was notified by TFC Mapes of a red motorcycle traveling eastbound with no tag displayed. I observed the motorcycle near mile marker 86 and confirmed that there was no tag displayed. I activated my emergency lights and siren. The driver, who was later identified as Jathen Clayton, looked back at me multiple times with my lights and siren activated before he began to accelerate to a high rate of speed. I notified Troop E Communications that I was in pursuit and provided them with my location and direction of travel. Cpl. Rutledge was a few vehicles in front of Clayton and Cpl. Rutledge activated his emergency lights for Clayton to stop but he did not. Instead, he continued to accelerate and passed Cpl. Rutledge in the left lane. I continued to pursue Clayton on Interstate 20 Eastbound and was able to begin to pass him near mile marker 90. I attempted to get in front of him to attempt to reduce his speed, but Clayton out accelerated me to where I could not get in front of him. At this point, I noticed that Clayton was gaining some distance from me. I visually estimated his speed of travel to be 130MPH. I glanced at my department issued Stalker DSR 2X radar and quickly confirmed that Clayton was traveling 137 MPH. We continued on Interstate 20 and TFC Smith advised he was positioned a few miles ahead of us on Interstate 20 and would attempt to reduce Clayton’s speed when we approached. As we approached TFC Smith, Clayton again swerved around him in the left lane. As we continued on Interstate 20, at about the 97 mile marker, I noticed that sparks were coming from Clayton’s vehicle. I was able to pass him and began to conduct a rolling road block. I observed through my side mirrors that Clayton was still attempting to pass me. As he began to move to the left lane, I stayed in front of him. Clayton attempted to pass me on the left by entering a grassy area between my unit and a cable barrier. I observed through my driver's side mirror that Clayton began to lay his motorcycle down. I notified Troop E Communications that Clayton had crashed. As I turned around to return to the crash scene, I observed TFC Smith exiting his vehicle and began placing his handcuffs on Clayton. I quickly ran up to assist TFC Smith in placing Clayton in handcuffs. An ambulance was called to the scene to check Clayton who was complaining of leg pain. I retrieved his driver’s license from his inside pocket of his jacket. As I checked his name through GCIC/NCIC, he returned with a warrant out of Cherokee County for probation violation with the original charge of larceny. Once paramedics arrived on scene they advised Clayton would need to be transported to a hospital to be further medically evaluated. After checking the VIN number from the motorcycle is returned out of New Hampshire. CarFax revealed that the motorcycle had not been registered since June 1, 2010. Warrants have been secured on Clayton.
