Around 10:48 PM on November 2, 2024, Sergeant Spencer with the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office observed a red 2016 Nissan being driven erratically. He initiated a traffic stop, and the driver pulled over in the vicinity of Byrom Street and Park Avenue. He exited the vehicle and made contact with the driver of the Nissan, who was identified as 27-year-old Destanie Heslar. As he was speaking with Destanie, he detected the odor of alcohol and observed other indicators of impairment. Deputy Henry Hancock arrived on scene shortly afterwards and initiated his DUI investigation. Based on the officers’ suspicion of impairment, Destanie was asked to perform field sobriety exercises. Around this time, she mentioned that she worked as a correctional officer. Deputy Hancock started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. During the HGN test, Deputy Hancock observed the lack of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test. During the Walk and Turn test, Destanie did not touch heel-to-toe on each step and turned improperly. The final exercise was the One Leg Stand test. During the One Leg Stand test, Destanie failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion. Based on her erratic driving, the odor of alcohol, her indicators of impairment, and her inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, Deputy Hancock told Destanie that she was being placed under arrest for DUI. After she was placed inside the patrol car, she mentioned multiple times that she worked as a correctional officer. Destanie was eventually transported to the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office for further processing. At the jail, she refused to submit breath samples. She was charged with a DUI (316.193.1a). Destanie was eventually released pending her court appearance on a $500 bond. ---------------------------------------------------- Please LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and consider supporting this channel (email us for more information).
