On July 1, 2023, at around 2:15 AM, Patrolman Samuel Greendyk of the Montville Township Police Department noticed a 2009 Dodge Caliber driving erratically on River Road. He followed the car and saw it swerving in a serpentine manner. The driver, 20-year-old Karina Armando, turned onto Kanouse Lane and stopped voluntarily. Greendyk activated his lights for a traffic stop. Karina claimed she hadn't consumed alcohol, but showed signs of impairment. Another officer, Thomas French, arrived to assist. Karina was asked to perform field sobriety tests. During the tests, Karina showed difficulty. She recited the alphabet from "E" to "P" correctly, but with a brief pause. In the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test, her eye movements indicated impairment. She failed the Walk and Turn test by not walking heel-to-toe and swaying her arms for balance. She also failed the One Leg Stand test, struggling to raise her foot properly and lacking balance. Considering her erratic driving, incoherent statements, and poor performance on the sobriety tests, Greendyk arrested Karina for driving under the influence. Karina's father signed a form, and she was issued summonses for driving while intoxicated, refusal of breath testing, reckless driving, careless driving, and failure to maintain lane.
