It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: At 11:55 PM on August 4, 2024, Edgewater Police received a call about a three-car accident on River Road near Hilliard Avenue. Patrolman John Hansen arrived just two minutes later and approached the driver of a 2015 Infiniti QX60. The front of the Infiniti was badly damaged, and the airbags had deployed. The driver, identified as Lauren, explained to Patrolman Hansen that she was on her way home after leaving Volume Up Karaoke in Edgewater. Patrolman Hansen asked her if she had drunk any alcohol that night. She confessed to having three beers before driving. Sensing she might be impaired, he requested that Lauren complete field sobriety tests. Patrolman Hansen began the evaluation with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. He noticed that Lauren's eyes did not move smoothly, there was a clear shaking when her eyes were fully turned, and the shaking started before her eyes reached 45 degrees. Next, they moved on to the Walk and Turn Test. Lauren struggled with this task; she couldn't touch heel-to-toe on each step, counted the steps wrong, and did not turn as instructed. Finally, they tried the One Leg Stand test. Here too, Lauren didn’t lift her foot correctly and relied on her arms for support. After the car accident, Lauren was arrested due to her admission of drinking alcohol and her poor performance on field sobriety tests. The driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee was taken to Palisade Medical Center for evaluation. Following her arrest, Lauren's vehicle was impounded for 12 hours under John’s Law. Patrolman Hansen then took her to the Edgewater Police Department for processing. At the station, she was informed about the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators and agreed to provide breath samples. Her Alcotest results showed a BAC of 0.21%, which is more than twice the legal limit of 0.08%. After processing Lauren, they released her to her mother. She signed a form about potential liability for Lauren's upcoming court appearance.
