A routine disabled vehicle check quickly escalates into a serious investigation when an officer detects signs of severe impairment. Sergeant Matthew Gajewski initiated contact with a driver whose 2020 Toyota SUV had a flat tire on Shore Road. During the initial interaction, the officer observed slurred speech and detected a strong odor of alcohol, prompting a suspicion of driving under the influence. The driver denied consuming alcohol and refused to provide her license and registration, leading the sergeant to offer field sobriety exercises. Despite repeated instructions, the driver failed to adequately perform the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, Walk and Turn, and One Leg Stand tests, exhibiting stumbling and an inability to follow directions. Based on these observations and the refusal to cooperate, the driver was placed under arrest for operating under the influence. At the police department, she eventually provided breath samples, revealing a blood alcohol content of 0.332%, significantly exceeding the legal limit. She was subsequently released to a responsible party and issued multiple summonses, including for operating under the influence, reckless driving, careless driving, and leaving the scene of an accident, while her vehicle was impounded. --- Transparency through the lens of the law.
