A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck northwestern Greece early Sunday, causing damage to buildings in at least one village. The quake occurred at 5:32 a.m. east of Leptokarya, about 50 kilometers from Ioannina, with its epicenter at a depth of around 10 kilometers. A smaller magnitude 4.7 temblor followed. State ERT television reported severe damage to two churches and extensive cracks in houses in the village of Psina near Ioannina. Greece is located in a highly earthquake-prone region, but quakes causing extensive damage and fatalities are uncommon. In 1999, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake near Athens resulted in 143 deaths.
