A black 2019 Tesla Model 3 suddenly pulled out of its spot. It almost hit his patrol car. He flipped on his lights for a stop. The driver complied right away. The Tesla's driver turned out to be 22-year-old Joniyah Cardenas. She confessed to drinking alcohol that night. As Officer Willey talked to her, he smelled booze on her breath. He spotted an open bottle of Casamigos tequila in the car. Her signs of being drunk led him to call Officer Domenick Allegretta. He came to run sobriety tests. First came the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus check. Next was the Walk and Turn. Joniyah missed heel-to-toe steps. She turned the wrong way. She took too many steps back to the start. Last, she tried the One Leg Stand. She didn't lift her foot right. She wobbled and lost balance. Her wild driving, the alcohol smell, her drunk signs, that open bottle, and her failed tests sealed it. Officers arrested her for DUI. They impounded the car for 12 hours under John's Law. Officer Willey drove her to the station for booking. There, they read her the standard rights for drivers. She agreed to a breath test. The Alcotest showed 0.13% blood alcohol—almost twice the 0.08% limit. Once paperwork ended, they let her go with a sober friend. He signed her liability warning for court.
