-Ogden, UT. -June 13, 2023. 23-year-old Alex Lopez of Washington Terrace has been identified as the deceased suspect in the Ogden officer-involved shooting. The incident started on the evening of June 13 at a bar located near the 100 block of 25th Street in downtown Ogden. According to Deputy Chief Young with Ogden police, two callers reported a disturbance, stating that a man may be assaulting a woman in the parking lot and that the suspect was armed with a handgun. The suspect was believed to have left the area in a black Lincoln SUV, Young said. Responding officers quickly located the suspected vehicle in the vicinity of 17th and Washington Boulevard and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. However, as the officers were about to approach the vehicle, Lopez quickly fled the scene, running a red light at the intersection of 17th and Washington. Young said. the officers pursued the vehicle, and within minutes, Lopez was spotted again at 12th and Liberty Avenue. Following the vehicle for a few blocks, two officers successfully stopped Lopez's vehicle near the 700 block of 8th Street. "Before the officers were able to exit their vehicle the suspect exited the driver's door of the vehicle and advanced on the officers withdrawing a handgun and firing at the officers in their vehicles," Young said during a press conference on Wednesday. In response, the officer who had initiated the stop returned fire, striking Lopez, according to Young. Lopez was later found on the ground in front of his vehicle. During the initial traffic stop, another individual had fled from the vehicle through the passenger door and has not yet been located, police said. The footage, along with dashcam video and other evidence, has been turned over to the Weber County investigators, who are leading the investigation. The officer who fired their weapon has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure in such cases. Currently, a total of nine Ogden City police officers are on administrative leave due to their involvement in recent shootings. The Weber County Attorney's Office Critical Incident Investigation Team is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting. It has been released that Lopez had a history of convictions, including four counts of felony discharge of a firearm in 2019, for which he had been on parole at the time of the incident. The department also emphasized their concern about the release of convicted felons, particularly those involved in violent crimes, back into the community, posing a risk to both officers and civilians.
