Around 11:10 PM on April 7, 2025, Officers Matthew Bonnano and John Rodriguez with the Hoboken Police Department were on patrol in the vicinity of Sixth Street and Harrison Street. They observed a Honda strike a parked vehicle on Sixth Street, and the Honda sustained severe front-end damages on the passenger side. They advised dispatch and made contact with the driver as well as the other occupants of the vehicle. As Officer Bonnano made contact with the occupants of the vehicle, he immediately detected the odor of alcohol. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Jackeline Fuentesluna, and she was asked to exit the vehicle. When Officer Bonnano asked her how much she had to drink, she admitted to consuming 2 drinks earlier that evening. Based on their suspicion of impairment, she was asked to perform field sobriety exercises after Sergeant Roary Miller and another officer arrived on scene to assist. The first field sobriety exercise was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. The second exercise they attempted was the Walk and Turn test. Jackeline did not seem to understand the instructions, and she was unable to complete the test. Based on the motor vehicle crash, her admission to consuming alcohol earlier that evening, and her inability to satisfactorily complete the field sobriety exercises, Jackeline was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. A search of her vehicle incident to arrest yielded the presence of multiple open containers. Her vehicle was impounded for a 12-hour hold according to John’s Law. She was searched on scene by Officer Rose Kanan before being placed in the patrol car. Officer Kanan later told the other officers that she was Jackeline’s high school classmate. Officer Bonnano transported Jackeline to the Hoboken Police Department for further processing. Jackeline was read the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators at the station, but she refused to submit breath samples. Jackeline was eventually released to a sober adult pending her court appearance after they signed the Potential Liability Warning form on Jackeline’s behalf. Jackeline was issued the following citations: Operating under the influence, refusal to submit to chemical test, consent to take samples of breath, reckless driving, failure to possess driver insurance card, open container, and operating with a probationary driver’s license after 11:01 PM ---------------------------------------------- Please LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and consider supporting this channel (email us for more information). (P.L. 2024, c.16). Defendants are considered innocent until proven guilty. The New Jersey Supreme Court has previously affirmed in Salzano v. North Jersey Media Group, 993 A.2d 778 (2010) that “The fair-report privilege reflects the judgment that the need, in a self-governing society, for free-flowing information about matters of public interest outweighs concerns over the uncompensated injury to a person's reputation.” This video advances a compelling public interest. The summary of events was based on records that are “open to public view through open access to public records” as defined in the Salzano case. In Ramos v. Flowers, 429 N.J. Super. 13, the Appellate Division of the Superior Court has also affirmed the right to film law enforcement interactions.
