The Background Ramiro Martinez, 48, was the husband of Irene Banda. Banda (about 59 at sentencing) and Jorge Castellanos (about 38 at sentencing), a friend of her son and brother, were the defendants. Also involved were Banda’s brother Arnold DeLeon (a double amputee with prosthetic limbs who died of natural causes in July 2022 before he could be charged) and her son Calixtro Serda (on probation with an ankle monitor who did not travel). DeLeon’s neighbor Karen Rodriguez later pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence. Banda told DeLeon that Martinez had assaulted her. DeLeon said he would do something about it. The group agreed Castellanos would drive DeLeon to Rosenberg because of DeLeon’s condition. At sentencing, Martinez’s children described abuse they said they suffered while in Banda’s care. Banda’s defense claimed she had been abused by Martinez; prosecutors challenged the expert testing and introduced phone messages showing she had been flirting with multiple people in the months before the killing. The Crime On September 11, 2020, inside the couple’s home in Rosenberg, Fort Bend County, Texas, Banda gave Martinez alprazolam to reduce his alertness. DeLeon and Castellanos drove from Corpus Christi in a rented red Veloster, stopped at a Richmond Walmart for latex gloves and T-shirts, and texted Banda “outside. open.” Banda let them in the front door and had left a gun in the entryway. DeLeon took the gun to the bedroom. An initial shot missed and woke Martinez, who fought back. During the struggle DeLeon shot Martinez in the back and handed the gun to Castellanos, who shot him in the head. The group then staged a robbery: Castellanos loosely tied Banda’s wrists with a computer cord so she could free herself. DeLeon left in the Veloster; Castellanos took several of Martinez’s guns in Banda’s Ford F-150. Banda called 911 reporting a burglary. Martinez died from the gunshot wounds. The Investigation Police initially treated the case as a home-invasion robbery. A neighbor saw the red Veloster. Banda gave an incorrect license-plate number for the “stolen” F-150 (two characters off). The correct plate from insurance records allowed cameras to track both vehicles. The Veloster was traced to Castellanos, found abandoned in Nueces County with a Walmart receipt inside, and surveillance identified him. He was arrested in October 2020 at the Hidalgo border crossing. Banda was not charged at first because evidence was incomplete. After Castellanos provided information in 2024, a warrant was issued and she was arrested in March 2024 in Bexar County. Cell-phone extractions recovered the deleted “outside. open.” text and corroborated the account. Scene evidence supported the missed shot and struggle. Conviction and Sentencing Both pleaded guilty to murder (first-degree felony) in the 434th District Court before Judge J. Christian Becerra and asked the court to set punishment. Separate hearings were held a day apart. In mid-August 2026, District Attorney Brian Middleton announced the sentences: Irene Banda received life in prison; Jorge Castellanos received 60 years. Both must serve at least 30 years of flat time before parole eligibility.
