Store loss prevention staff escorted the pair to a secure office and waited for officers to arrive. A Canton police officer responded to the call and began routine procedures, including identifying the suspects and checking for weapons. The interaction initially appeared calm and cooperative, with no immediate signs of escalation. Several minutes into the encounter, the male suspect—later identified as 21-year-old Shane C. L. Newman—suddenly reached into his clothing while seated and produced a handgun. Newman pointed the weapon at the responding officer and attempted to fire, but the gun did not discharge. The officer and a Walmart loss prevention employee immediately acted, rushing Newman and wrestling him to the ground. The suspect was quickly restrained and placed in handcuffs. No injuries were reported during the struggle. Investigators later confirmed the firearm was loaded. During a subsequent search, officers also recovered suspected narcotics. What began as a shoplifting detention quickly escalated into a serious felony investigation. Newman now faces multiple felony charges, including attempted murder. Police say he was legally prohibited from possessing a firearm due to prior convictions. A second suspect, 23-year-old Katerina D. Jeffrey, was also taken into custody and charged in connection with the theft. She faces a charge of complicity to commit robbery. At an arraignment on December 19, Canton Municipal Judge Mary A. Falvey set Newman’s bond at $1 million and ordered him to have no contact with the victim or Walmart. Jeffrey’s bond was set at $500,000, with a similar no-contact order involving Walmart.
