The Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) has released body camera footage from an officer involved in a deadly use-of-force incident that occurred in front of SMPD headquarters on Saturday, October 5. Under California law, police departments are required to release video and audio recordings of critical incidents within 45 days. The incident is currently under investigation by the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office and the SMPD Internal Affairs Unit. The critical incident video includes footage leading up to the attack, beginning with an earlier robbery at a nearby Target store. The suspect assaulted an employee and stole a package of knives, leaving the packaging nearby with one knife missing. Store security flagged down an SMPD officer and reported the assault. The suspect then walked several blocks to the SMPD headquarters. At approximately 5:21 p.m., an SMPD officer assisting residents outside the headquarters on Olympic Boulevard was suddenly attacked by the suspect, identified as 28-year-old Deyaa Abdelhadi Halaibeh, a New York State resident. Halaibeh, armed with an eight-inch chef’s knife, stabbed the officer multiple times in an unprovoked assault. The officer responded by firing three shots during the initial attack and, after the suspect retrieved the knife and advanced again, fired four additional shots. Halaibeh was pronounced dead at the scene. He had no known criminal record in California or any connection to the SMPD. SMPD officers provided first aid until emergency services arrived. The injured officer, who sustained serious knife wounds to the neck and shoulder, was hospitalized. According to an SMPD social media update, he was released from the hospital on Sunday and is recovering.
