On December 21, 2024, just after midnight in St. Charles, Illinois, chaos broke out at a senior living facility when 41-year-old Daniel Escalera entered the building wielding a chainsaw. Officers responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a man terrorizing residents inside with a running chainsaw. When police arrived, Escalera was inside the facility near the cafeteria, surrounded by residents. Bodycam footage shows officers giving numerous commands to drop the weapon while displaying a taser. Escalera refused to comply and started the chainsaw indoors, prompting an immediate and intense escalation. An officer deployed a taser, briefly knocking Escalera down, but he quickly got back up, grabbed the chainsaw again, and began charging toward police. Officers retreated and were eventually forced to fire on Escalera as he advanced with the chainsaw. He was struck multiple times and received medical aid on scene before being transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Following the incident, the Kane County Coroner's Office confirmed Escalera had methamphetamine in his system and was likely suffering from methamphetamine-induced psychosis at the time. The officers involved were later cleared of any wrongdoing after a full investigation.
