On September 9, 2024, Las Cruces Police were called to Walmart where a known shoplifter was in the store. Officer Thouvenell was on scene when the 26-year-old woman ripped the tags off a $49.98 pair of shoes and wore them past all points of sale without paying for them. When officers confronted her, she ignored them. She was physically detained and taken to the loss prevention office, where she was told that she would be cited and released if she cooperated. However, she didn't cooperate and soon found herself in handcuffs and on her way to the Dona Ana County Detention Center. She was charged with shoplifting and resisting arrest. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
