While waiting on the towing company to arrive. Officer spotted a Hispanic female from a distance walking at a fast pace in the area. The female identified herself as Darlene. Darlene was sweating and smelled heavily of alcohol, when asked why was she walking at such a fast pace she stated she saw officers and panicked. She had a minor scrap on her left knee, Which she stated she fell from walking fast. She stated she was just out walking when asked where she was headed. Dispatch was able to find call history with Darlene and the involved vehicle. At this time she was detained (behind back) and read Miranda. She denied driving the vehicle, she stated that she does not even have a vehicle. While on scene, the cell phone that Darlene had on her person before she was detained received a phone call, she answered the phone immediately advised whoever was on the phone to just go to her house and quickly hung up. The individual was trying to tell Darlene where she was parked but I assumed Darlene hung the phone up quickly to avoid the conversation that could link her with the accident. With Dispatch being able to confirm Darlene has had previous call history with the involved vehicle, the witness doing a show up and identifying Darlene as the person she saw leaving the vehicle after the accident, officer had enough reasoning to believe Darlene was the driver and she was then advised she was under arrest (double locked). She complained of chest pains and was transported to PARMC for treatment. Upon clearance she was placed back into custody (behind back and double locked) and transported and turned over to the country jail for DUI and hit and run. Once we were at the county jail and er proper was turned over to her, Darlene stated that the same cell phone she answered on scene was not her phone so at the time officer advised her that he would put into safe keeping. On September 30th officer received a phone call from Darlene advising that she remembered the cell phone belonged to her son. The cell phone was placed into evidence for safe keeping.
