An officer's observation of erratic driving quickly escalates into a full DUI investigation, revealing a driver's struggle with basic instructions. Around 6:27 PM on April 23, 2022, a patrolman observed a dark blue sedan driving erratically on Route 36, prompting a K-turn and pursuit. The driver, later identified as a 37-year-old woman, made several erratic turns before stopping on Hillside Avenue. Upon interaction, she exhibited slurred speech and appeared disoriented, unaware of the reason for the stop, stating she was driving her ex's car to see her son nearby. Due to signs of intoxication, a supervisor was called to the scene, and two additional officers arrived to assist in administering field sobriety tests. During the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN), Walk and Turn, and One Leg Stand tests, the driver demonstrated significant impairment, including a lack of smooth pursuit, difficulty following instructions, and an inability to maintain balance, though she did recite the alphabet correctly. Based on her driving infractions and poor performance on the exercises, she was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. At police headquarters, she invoked her Miranda rights and refused both questioning and a breathalyzer test.
