It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: At 12:14 a.m. on August 3, 2023, Sergeant Thomas Hayes from the Point Pleasant Beach Police spotted a passenger in a red 2022 Jeep shouting out the window near Ocean Avenue and Elizabeth Avenue. He started tailing the Jeep. Soon, he saw the driver weave across the road and turn without signaling. He kept following and pulled the vehicle over right in front of Spicy’s Taco & Tequila Bar at 1506 Route 35 North. Hayes approached from the passenger side. The driver turned out to be 26-year-old Carly. As they talked, he smelled alcohol on her breath. He also noticed signs she was impaired. More officers showed up to help. They asked Carly to step out and do some sobriety tests. First came the alphabet test, from A to Z. Next was the one-leg stand. Carly didn't lift her foot right and dropped it too soon. Then she tried the walk-and-turn test. She missed heel-to-toe steps, turned wrong, and counted the steps off. Last was the horizontal gaze nystagmus test. Hayes saw her eyes jerk without smooth tracking, hold the jerk at the edge, and start jerking before 45 degrees. Her wild driving, the booze smell, and the botched tests led Hayes to arrest Carly for DUI. They impounded her Jeep for 12 hours under John’s Law. Officer Biondi drove her to the station for booking. There, they read her the standard statement for drivers. She agreed to give breath samples. The Alcotest showed 0.17% blood alcohol—twice the 0.08% limit. Once processed, officers let her go to her parents. Her dad signed the liability warning for her, until court. Hayes gave her these tickets: operating under the influence, reckless driving, straying from marked lanes, and no proper signal. Court files show Carly pleaded guilty to DUI on February 27, 2024. She got three months without her license, 12 hours at a drunk driver class, and two days in jail. Fines totaled $640.
