He noticed a 2021 Jeep that was driving without tail lights. The Deputy initiated a traffic stop, and the vehicle entered the Little Caesar’s parking lot. The driver, 19-year-old Alyson Newstrom, informed the Deputy that she had been at “Greek Row” but initially denied drinking any alcohol. However, after smelling alcohol, the Deputy asked to check her eyes and observed that her eye movement was not smooth. When questioned further, Alyson admitted to having 2 shots of alcohol about 2 hours earlier. After acknowledging her consumption of alcohol, Deputy Miller gave her a chance to take voluntary field sobriety tests. Around this time, Deputies Christopher Olin and Morgan Scharff arrived to provide assistance. The first test was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN), during which Deputy Miller noted that she did not follow smoothly and showed distinct, sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation in both eyes. The second test was the Walk and Turn, where Alyson struggled to keep a straight line while walking. The last test was the One Leg Stand. During this test, Alyson became confused while counting and sought clarification, even as she balanced on one leg. She counted to 20 but lost her balance and had to place her foot back on the ground. After completing the voluntary field sobriety tests, Alyson was asked by the Deputy to take a Preliminary Breath Test (PBT). She mentioned that her father had been a police officer and chose not to take the test. Due to her admission of drinking alcohol, her inability to pass the sobriety tests, and her refusal to take the PBT, Deputy Miller arrested Alyson for driving under the influence. Meanwhile, Deputy Olin remained with the car's passenger to make sure she got home safely, and the vehicle was left in a secure spot until Alyson was sober. Alyson was later taken to the Pullman Police Department, where she waived her Constitutional rights and agreed to talk to the officers. Deputy Miller informed Alyson about the Implied Consent Warnings. After a 20-minute observation period, she consented to take a breathalyzer test. The results showed her blood alcohol content (BAC) was 0.187%, which is more than double the legal limit of 0.08% for drivers over 21 and nine times the 0.02% limit for those under 21. After the test, Alyson was taken to Whitman County Jail in Colfax, Washington, where her bail was set at $500. She received a citation for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) under RCW 46.61.502 and was released after posting bail, with a required court date. On May 26, 2022, Alyson admitted guilt to charges of Driving While Under the Influence (DUI) due to a breathalyzer result of .08. She received a sentence of one day in jail, which could be changed to 15 days of Electronic Home Monitoring (EHM). Following that, she will be on supervised probation for 24 months. Additionally, she is required to pay various fees, including a $43 Criminal Conviction Fee, a $120.12 DUI Cost Recovery Fee, a $600 Supervised Probation Fee, and a $1,000 fine (with a total fine of $2,000, of which $1,000 is suspended). Her driving privileges in Washington State are suspended for 90 days. 04:13 let me check out your eyes with my light. 05:15 So that's the plan? 05:45 that cop ruins parties I can tell. Damn him. 08:27 Look down at your toe, camel or foot 12:25 ? 44:36 (turn on Captions)… he says once we get both breath samples… 1:14:50 they bleeped out her weight.
