On June 14, 2022, Athens-Clarke County Police responded to the Walmart on a report of a shoplifting suspect being detained by loss prevention agents. The 27-year-old woman was seen taking tags off of a pair of pants and putting them on her body. When officers arrived, she was escorted to the loss prevention office. Store personnel totaled the stolen items and they totaled $361.45. The woman started acting irrationally stating that she needed medicine and should go to the hospital, instead of jail. Another officer ran her criminal record and learned that she was a habitual shoplifter, who had multiple open cases pending in court. Ultimately, she was taken to the Clarke County jail. This shoplifting case was eventually combined with several other arrests and the charges were dismissed after she agreed to pled guilty to one of the other cases. She was ultimately placed on probation.
