The officer initiated a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, identified as Sandy. Immediate signs of impairment were noted, including the odor of alcohol, as the driver admitted to consuming alcohol earlier in the evening and claimed she was only texting. When asked to exit the vehicle to perform Field Sobriety Exercises (FST), Sandy's chance to avoid a DUI arrest began to slip away. The sequence of tests started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test, followed by the Walk and Turn test, where the driver struggled to maintain heel-to-toe steps and turned improperly. The final exercise, the One Leg Stand test, resulted in further failure as she could not raise her foot correctly or count in the required sequence. Based on the traffic infractions, the indicators of impairment, and her complete inability to adequately perform the exercises, Sandy was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. She was then transported to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office for processing. Crucially, Sandy refused to submit to a breath test at the jail, resulting in an automatic 12-month driver's license suspension. Her vehicle was impounded, and she was later released pending her court appearance.
