The Sheriff’s Office said a DeLand Middle School student was arrested overnight after posting on Snapchat about bringing a gun to school. The message was shared in a group chat with other 6th graders. According to the Sheriff’s Office, a Fortify Florida tip was received around 9:40 p.m., prompting an immediate investigation. The student was taken into custody on two felony charges and processed at the Family Resource Center before being transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ). Officials are urging parents and guardians in Volusia County Schools to use this opportunity to talk with their children about the serious consequences of making threats, even as a joke.
