A high-speed traffic stop on a rural highway rapidly transforms into a detailed investigation when officers suspect driver impairment. On May 8, 2022, an officer observed a vehicle traveling 85 MPH in a 55 MPH zone, prompting a coordinated stop. Upon approach, Patrolman Poon detected a strong odor of alcohol from the driver, who initially admitted to consuming wine and claimed pregnancy. The driver then agreed to perform standardized field sobriety exercises, where Patrolwoman Lippencott observed all six indicators of impairment during the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. Subsequent tests, including the Walk and Turn and One Leg Stand, further indicated impairment as the driver struggled with balance and proper execution. Based on these observations and the driver's admissions, she was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. At police headquarters, the driver's breath samples revealed a blood alcohol content of 0.14%, leading to multiple summonses before her release to a family member. --- Transparency through the lens of the law.
